Welcome to the Department of World Languages and Cultures

The Department of World Languages offers AA Degrees in French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Foreign Languages, as well as a Skills Certificate in Spanish Language. In addition to our language courses, we also offer courses in linguistics, literature, and civilization. Whether you're learning a new language to improve your employability, to study or live overseas, to discover new cultures, or to meet new people and to develop life-long friendships, you're bound to find the right course and instructor here at LAVC to begin your world language study!

If you're planning to transfer to a four-year college or university, also remember that world language majors are excellent alternatives to the more impacted majors.

In planning your program, please consult the two-year schedule below.

In a business community that is becoming more integrated and more global, if you can communicate with new clients and companies in their language, you can begin building solid business relationships and secure your own future career prospects and even higher pay. Knowing another language and culture can give you an edge on your resume and help you stand out from other job applicants, both regional and international.

If you learn one or two world languages while majoring in a field such as STEM, political science, or business administration, this can give you a wide range of skills that you can apply to many careers and can make you a very appealing job candidate.

And if you learn one or two world languages while majoring in another Humanities and Communication CAP major (e.g., Music, Art, English, ESL, Communication Studies, History, Humanities, Theater, or Journalism), this can also strengthen your employability.

Studying and majoring in a world language is a logical choice if one of your goals is to study and work in another country. You can take the first steps in getting to know the basics of another language and learn more about the history and culture of its native speakers.

Knowing a world language can prepare you for jobs and careers: e.g., interpreter, translator, au pair, field researcher, human resources specialist, foreign service officer, hospitality and tourism (hotel and restaurant manager, tour guide, chef, event planner, flight attendant), community health worker, and more! It can also increase your opportunities in business management, the natural and social sciences, as well as in music, theater, and the arts.
