Music Department

Welcome to LAVC Music!

LAVC is an all-Steinway institution that offers a comprehensive curriculum in commercial or traditional music studies, with three degrees and five certificate pathways. The department offers a wide range of courses including music fundamentals, instrumental and vocal performance, theory, and history, along with four strong ensembles: College Choir, Chamber Singers, Wind Ensemble, and Orchestra. Detailed course offerings and degree information may be found below in the schedule of classes or the College Catalog.

The Applied Music Program is designed for performers who strive to transfer to four-year institutions for a Bachelor's degree in music. This terrific program offers students the opportunity individual instruction on their primary instrument to prepare for auditions and performances. Students may apply and audition for the program and once accepted, fulfill the curricular requirements of the program. For information about the application and/or audition dates, please contact the department's Instructional Assistant, Mr. James Grude (@email).

With varied course offerings, the department features faculty who are highly accomplished performers and scholars in their disciplines. Our dedicated faculty and staff specialize in hands-on attention and bring a wealth of real-world experience into the classroom. Tenured faculty profiles and adjunct faculty listings may be found below under the two areas of study (AOS), Music and Commercial Music. Both Music and Commercial Music are part of the Arts, Media, and Design Pathway.

Musicians work in a wide range of fields including performance, production, composition, therapy, or education.  The skills you develop in music classes will help you develop skills required for your career - whether the next step is entering the music industry or transferring to a university. LAVC Music graduates have transferred to four-year programs at USC, UCLA. CSUN, CSULA, and Berklee. The University of Southern California (USC) has one of the top four-year music programs on the west coast, with options in traditional, jazz, or film idioms.

LAVC Music also has wonderful opportunities for community members to perform in ensembles or take non-credit courses with free, repeatable offerings titled OLD ADL. For general inquiries, please contact the department's Instructional Assistant, Mr. James Grude (@email).
