- Communication Studies (also known as Speech Communication) is the study of human messaging and its impact on individual relationships, gathered audiences, and our broader society. The Communication Studies Associate in Arts for Transfer (AA-T) emphasizes training in effective strategies of communicating with others and a greater understanding of why those strategies work (or sometimes don't). The Associate in Arts for Transfer (AA-T) is intended for students who plan to complete a bachelor's degree in a similar major at a CSU campus. Students completing these degrees (AA-T or AS-T) are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major.

LAVC Forensics (Speech & Debate) Team
On the LAVC Forensics team students research and prepare a variety of speeches, performances, and debate topics for competition against other community colleges and universities in Southern California (with occasional travel to other parts of the country). Members of the team learn to develop their voice and advocacy skills in speaking out on important social issues. The team is connected to the COM department with many professors having a background and experience in speech and debate.
