The Teaching and Learning Workgroup

The Teaching and Learning Workgroup, formed in Fall 2020, is a melding of the Professional Development Advisory Committee (PDAC) with the Academic Senate/Guided Pathways (AS/GP) workgroup.

This committee is formed through the Academic Senate, Guided Pathways, and Professional Development (PD) to ensure  wide representation across departments and disciplines.

We meet on the first Tuesday of the month at 1:30 in Zoom.

The committee is co-chaired by the GP Navigator, Becky Frank, and the Faculty PD Coordinator, Sally Raskoff. Contact us if you have questions or comments.

The PDAC is a subcommittee of the Academic Senate. PDAC discusses faculty  professional development issues, including those related to training activities, inititatives, flex obligation, and reports, i.e., Flex report, Program Review, and needs and outcomes assessments.

The AS/GP workgroup is populated by the Academic Senate and Guided Pathways to promote widespread adoption of instructional practices that promote the goals of Guided Pathways Pillar 4: Ensure student learning.

Summary of advisory committee decisions on flex
Flex should involve extra work beyond expected job duties — grading papers does not qualify.
Based on faculty requests, we agreed to grant the following hours for activities:

  • Conferences = maximum of 6.7 hours per day
  • Additional committee service = a maximum of 6.7 hours per semester (except hiring, evaluation, or ad hoc task forces = number of hours served, up to a maximum of 6.7)
  • Service Learning = 3 hours per class
  • TAP (honors) classes = 6.7 hours per class
  • Flex credit is not given for attending social events (e.g., the Dean's Reception, the Winter Holiday luncheon).

See the PD planning worksheet for a more complete list of acceptable activities.
