Valley Star Journalists Earn Top Awards at Journalism Association Convention

Congratulations to LAVC student journalists Solomon Smith, Stephan Castaneda and Marcos Franco for earning top awards the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) virtual 2021 State Convention.

Valley Star Journalists Earn Top Awards at Journalism Association Convention

Student journalists from LAVC's student-run newspaper, The Valley Star, won top awards at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) virtual 2021 State Convention.

During the conference, the student work of Valley Star journalists earned a total of 7 awards. Student journalist Solomon O. Smith received 5 awards, Stephen Castaneda got 1 award, and Marcos Franco had an honorable mention.

  • Honorable Mention: Marcos Franco

Write-In Awards: Online Photo Story/Essay

  • Fourth Place: Solomon O. Smith

Paired with other four other national and state student journalism organizations, the convention's shared organizational format gave students access to school newsroom leadership from around the country.
