Congratulations to the Men's Water Polo team for bringing home the WSC Conference Championship for the fifth year in a row! They are heading to the So. Cal. Regional Championships as the number two seed on November 9-10 in Cerritos.

LAVC's Strengthening Working Families Highlighted at the Women in Leadership Higher Education Conference

The LAVC Family Resource Center and Strengthening Working Families were showcased as national models of holistic family support at the "Women in Leadership Higher Education Conference" on October 2-3 at the Harvard Faculty Club. Los Angeles Community College District Trustee Andra Hoffman, LAVC President Dr. Erika Endrijonas, LAVC Dean of Workforce Training Dr. Doug Marriott, and the LAVC Family Resource Center's Marni Roosevelt and Amber Angel spoke about how both programs have helped change the paradigm for student and workforce training participants in higher education.

LAVC ASU & Child Development Dept.'s Campus Food Drives Support our Helping Hands Pantry

The LAVC Associated Student Union (ASU) and the LAVC Child Development Department are holding Food Drives on campus in November to help the LAVC Helping Hands Pantry. Students, faculty, staff and the public are encouraged to donate canned and non-perishable foods to the Child Development Department Office (CDFC 166) from October 15-November 15, or the Student Life Office on the second floor of the Student Union (SU 208) from November 1-30.

LAVC English Department Offers Student Success Seminars for Faculty

The LAVC English Department is offering a new Student Success seminar series to provide faculty with strategies related to student success according to AB 705. Faculty can attend one of two workshop sessions offered in the following topics: "Reading Apprenticeship 1", "Reading Apprenticeship 2 / Threshold", "Culturally-Responsive Teaching & Equity", "Student Support Services and How to Use Them", "Technology in the Classroom", and "Faculty Support and Other Informative Skills". Students are also welcomed to attend.

PD Corner—October Activities Recap & Upcoming B.U.I.L.D. Book Club Series

Thank you to all the classified staff members who attended the Classified Staff Development Committee's Meet and Greet on October 9 with our new Professional Development Coordinator. LAVC also hosted the second meeting of the Institutional Effectiveness Partnership Initiative's (IEPI) Partnership Resource Team (PRT) on October 29, and our IEPI Steering Committee will begin work on writing our professional development plan. Coming up, LAVC Professional Development will offer a new B.U.I.L.D. (Belong, Uplift, Imagine, Learn, and Diversify) series featuring a book club, TED-style talks and campus speakers; LAVC Professional Development will send a campus email with more details.

LAVC has launched a new podcast called the Valley College Connection, which is produced in partnership with the LAVC Academic Resource Center and KVCM Monarch Radio. Hosted by professors John Kawai and Scott Weigand, it aims to inspire people with success stories of Valley College educator and students, as well as highlight resources and services that are making a difference on campus. LAVC Helping Hands Food Pantry Helps Hungry Students on Campus
LAVC Helping Hands Food Pantry Helps Hungry Students on Campus

The LAVC Hunger-Free Campus Initiative is helping our students who are experiencing homelessness and/or are food insecure. The new Helping Hands Food Pantry opened to distribute food to hungry students on Tuesdays and Wednesday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in Campus Center's Monarch Patio, and to assists students in applying for CalFresh. There is also going to be a Rummage Sale benefiting the LAVC Helping Hands Project on October 25 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Dr. Tasos Sioukas Published in NACCE Magazine & Presents Workshop at a NACCE Conference

The National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE) has published an article on "Instilling Entrepreneurial Mindset at Los Angeles Valley College" by LAVC Business Administration Department Chair Tasos Sioukas in its Summer/Fall 2018 issue. In addition, Tasos was invited to present a workshop on designing an entrepreneurship boot-camp program at the NACCE Go West regional conference on September 20 in San Francisco. His presentation focused on the design principles for creating a entrepreneurship boot-camp program, including combining the approach of effectuation with causation to enhance the success of start-ups.

LAVC Family Resource Center (FRC) Program Coordinator Amber Angel and LAVC student parent Eden Bryant were featured on a panel discussion on "supporting student parents" on September 30 at #RealCollege: A National Convening on Food and Housing Insecurity at Temple University in Philadelphia. They shared their experiences about the benefits of on-campus student parent programming that is being offered at Valley College.

Introducing the California Promise Grant—A New Name for the BOG Fee Waiver!

Have you heard? The California Board of Governors (BOG) Fee Waiver is now called the California College Promise Grant. It has the same application process and eligibility requirements as the BOG and still waives the per unit enrollment fee at California community colleges. Be sure to check the LAVC Financial Aid Web page for more info on the California College Promise Grant.
