Volunteer & Employment Opportunities

The Los Angeles Valley College Academic Resource Center (ARC) may hire new tutors for spring and fall semesters. There are opportunities to work as a tutor specifically in a designated center as well as  positions for course embedded tutors. These positions offer between five and twenty five hours per week, depending on the subject and availability. The position pays begins at $14.49 per hour and can increase with learning and experience. Please note that your application does not guarantee an interview. If you are contacted for an interview, that interview does not guarantee employment.

There are three steps:

  1. Apply – First, complete an electronic APPLICATION.
  2. First Interview – If you have both an application and a letter of recommendation on file, your application will be forwarded to a designated faculty member in that subject. If there is an opening available, that faculty member may contact you to arrange a first interview with you. You can download ARC Faculty Recommendation form.
  3. Final Instructions – If you are selected, you will be given additional instructions to complete paperwork and training.

The Math Lab offers both employment and volunteer opportunities to tutor in a variety of subject areas. As a tutor you will gain valuable experience that can be listed on your resume and college applications.

To be eligible for a paid position, students must meet the following criteria: 

  • Must be a) enrolled in 12 units at any accredited institution, or enrolled in 5 units in conjunction with at least 1 unit in the LAVC Cooperative Education Program for the current semester. Note: if you drop a class or for any other reason do not meet the unit requirement you will forfeit your position and you will not be eligible for paid employment. 
  • Or b) enrolled as a graduate in 9 units at an accredited institution.
  • Possess a minimum 2.0 GPA and must have received a letter grade of "B" or higher in the subject being tutored.
  • Submit a recommendation from a faculty member in the tutoring subject area. 

Addiational Information: 

  • LAVC students cannot work more than 25 hours for LACCD. This includes work study and non-work study assignments. 
  • Students not attending LAVC must submit unofficial transcripts that shows the number of units enrolled. 
  • Volunteers do not have a unit requirement.
