Laboratory Reading and Writing Classes
In addition to providing free one-to-one tutoring conferences to assist student with their writing at LAVC, the Writing Center also offers three classes where students can earn credit.
English 67 - Writing Laboratory - 0.5 unit. In English 67, students receive one-to-one assistance through tutoring conferences, writing workshops, and computer instruction. This class is helpful for students who are enrolled in other classes that have writing assignments such as English, Sociology, Child Development, etc., as students can bring in their homework and receive help. This class can also be useful for students who do not have writing assignments from other classes but want to practice academic essay writing.
English 68 - Reading Laboratory - 0.5 unit. In English 68, students receive one-to-one assistance through tutoring conferences, writing workshops, and computer instruction. Students can improve their reading comprehension and develop critical reading skills necessary for college level classes. Students can either bring in reading assignments from their other courses, or they can use the reading material available in the Writing Center to practice their reading.
English 69 - Writing and Revising on the Computer - 1 unit. In English 69, students receive one-to-one assistance through tutoring conferences, writing workshops, and computer instruction. Students learn how to cut, paste, edit, plus set up papers for MLA format. Students will also learn valuable researching skills including how to write summaries, evaluate websites, and use electronic databases.
