Meet The Staff
Mrs. Julia Mendoza graduated from California State University, Northridge with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration. For the past six years she had been the SFP Technician with the TRiO Upward Bound Program, assisting low income, first-generation high school students reach their post-secondary educational goals.
Prior to working for Upward Bound, Mrs. Mendoza was a student worker at LAVC. It was her experience, as a student worker that opened her eyes to some students needs for additional guidance and support, which drove her to become that support. She is currently pursuing a Masters degree in Educational Counseling to better assist student in reaching their goal of higher education.
She hopes to inspire those around her and show students and parents that higher education is available to everyone, as long as you are willing to work hard and be dedicated to the vision of a better future.

Sra. Julia Mendoza se graduó de California State University, Northridge con un título en Administración de Empresa. Durante los últimos seis años había sido la Técnica SFP de TRiO Upward Bound Programs, asistiendo a estudiantes de bajos ingresos y primera generación alcanzar sus metas educacionales y ingresar a una institución de alto nivel académico.
Antes del trabajar para Upward Bound, la Sra. Mendoza fue trabajadora estudiantil en LAVC. Fue su experiencia, como un trabajador estudiantil que abrió sus ojos a las necesidades de estudiantes que necesitaban dirección adicional y apoyo, esto la llevó a hacer ese apoyo. Actualmente trabaja para obtener un título de maestría en Consejería Académica para asistir mejor al estudiante en el alcance de su objetivo de la enseñanza superior.
Espera inspirar a aquellos alrededor de ella y mostrar a estudiantes y padres que la enseñanza superior está disponible para todos, mientras quieran trabajar y ser dedicados a la visión de un mejor futuro.

Ms. Katie De La Torre is the Academic Advisor for the Upward Bound program. She has 15 years of experience in the K-12 setting. She graduated with an A.A. in Liberal Arts from West Los Angeles College, a B.A. in Child Development from the California State University of Los Angeles, and an M.A. in Education with a Psychology Emphasis from Pepperdine University. Katie understands what it is to be the first person in the family to graduate from college. The challenges that came from not understanding the steps that are involved with the college admissions process was something that Katie and her family faced. Because of this, her passion is to provide students with the necessary resources to reach their ultimate academic goals after high school.
Mr. Robert Celis is the Academic Advisor for the Upward Bound-Math andScience program. Robert’s prior work experience includes working for LAUSD K-12 before-and-after school youth programs, has been an academic tutor for Applied Scholastics, a non-profit, and has worked for the Housing Authority of the City of L.A. with low-income housing residents and youth, leading them towards self-sufficiency; also, he briefly worked for L.A. County Department of Health Services. In addition, Robert started his LACCD career at L.A. Mission College in Admissions and Records.
Robert doubled majored in Sociology and Political Science, option Public Administration at California State Univ., Los Angeles. He is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Educational Counseling at University of La Verne. Robert comes from a big familia, he is the youngest of six siblings, five of whom pursued higher education. Uniquely, Robert and his siblings hold nine higher education degrees and counting. Robert is a first-generation, low-income student, and understands the common struggles similar students may encounter during their higher education pursuits.
Ms. Adriana Sánchez is the SFP Office Assistant for the Upward Bound Programs. Ms. Sánchez received her A.A in Liberal Arts from LAVC and graduated from California State University, Northridge with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. As a former student worker in the Admissions and Records Department at LAVC she brings with her the experience to assist the student’s needs in order for them to begin their future at our campus. In addition, she has helped a diversity of students from various cultural and economic statuses understand program requirements and the process of required documentation. Along with her administrative experience she personally understands the challenges students face to reach their goal in higher education. Her compassion to help others and support to the Upward Bound Programs will ease your transition to LAVC.
