The Village Cohort at Los Angeles Valley College


Our Village Cohort is designed to increase the retention rate, and to improve the academic success of students who meet the criteria for participation into the program.

What is a Cohort & What are the Benefits?

This cohort program groups students into the same courses during their first year. The number of grouped students may vary, but the program allows students to build strong relationships and study groups, which--in turn--gives students a sense of community and a team-based learning experience.

Criteria for Participation:

  • Must be a high school graduate
  • Must complete the LAVC Math & English Assessment Test
  • Must be highly motivated and have an educational goal of obtaining a college degree

First Year Curriculum:

          Fall Semester

  • English (level determined by assessment)
  • Math (level determined by assessment)
  • Counseling 20*
  • African American Studies 4*

          Spring Semester

  • English (level determined by Fall semester)
  • Math (level determined by Fall semester)
  • Sociology 11: Race and Ethnic Relations*
  • African American Studies 5*

*Course is UC and CSU transferable
