Degree and Certificate Programs

The Child Development Department offers a variety of options for students. These include three options for the Associate of Arts degree and seven options for certificates.

                                 Associate of Arts Degree
Students can choose to complete an AA (Associate of Arts) degree under either Plan A or Plan B. Plan A degrees are for students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university. The plan B degree is for students completing only the AA degree. All students working to complete an AA degree under Plan A must complete three (3) core courses. Students must also choose one of five specialization options and complete required courses for that option:

                          Occupational Certificate Programs
Students can apply for and receive certificates from the college. Applications for certificates may be obtained from the Child Development Department office (Math-Science Building, room #112) or the Office of Academic Affairs (Administration Building, room #101). Return the completed application to the Office of Academic Affairs.

Five certificates are available for students completing specific groups of courses. The certificates are:

1) Associate Teacher, Preschool (A)
2) Director, Preschool (B)
3) School Age Programs Teacher, Day Care (C)
4) Infant/Toddler Care Teacher (D)
5) Associate Teacher, Preschool, Literacy Emphasis (E)
6) Associate Teacher, Preschool, Special Education Emphasis (F)
7) Child Development Occupational Certificate, Teacher

Occupational Certificate - Child Development: Teacher
With additional G.E. units and required experience, the student will be eligible for the Child Development Permit as defined under Title 5. Meeting this requirement will enable the student to teach in federal and state preschool programs. (All Child Development courses require a minimum grade of C.)
