Don't Forget! Free Tutoring & Computer Labs Are Available During Finals Week

The LAVC offers free tutoring and support services during the Spring Semester to help students succeed in their classes. Students can take advantage of these services at various locations throughout the campus. 

The following is a list of the locations that offer tutoring and support services during the Spring 2018 semester:

The Academic Resource Center (ARC), which is on the second floor of the Library & Academic Resource Center (LARC), is home to the college's Writing Center, General Tutoring Center, and Math Lab, and the Computer Commons (open computer lab), and offers services such as free workshop on writing skills, study skills, and Math 110 throughout the semester as well as tutoring in selected subjects.

The Academic Resource Center: General Tutoring Center is located in LARC 213 offers students free tutoring by walk-in or appointment. Tutoring is available in a variety of subjects including accounting, astronomy, chemistry, child development, economics, French, music, physics, psychology, Spanish, sociology, and statistics. In addition, it has free textbook, headphone, and laptop rentals, and small group study rooms are available (by reservation). The General Tutoring Center is open Monday-Thursday from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.; it is closed on Sundays, campus holidays, March 29 due to a non-instruction day, March 30 for Cesar Chavez Day, March 31-April 8 for Spring Break, and May 28 for Memorial Day. The Academic Resource Center: Writing Center, which is located in LARC 229, offers students help with writing. It offers one-to-one and group tutoring sessions, writing workshops, instructive handouts and writing and study skills workshops. The Writing Center is open Monday-Thursday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Friday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.; it is closed on Sundays, campus holidays, March 29 due to a non-instruction day, March 30 for Cesar Chavez Day, March 31-April 8 for Spring Break, and May 28 for Memorial Day. For more details, visit the LAVC Writing Center Web page or call (818) 947-2810.

The Academic Resource Center: Math Lab is located in LARC 226 and offers help in all levels of math. This is drop-in tutoring lab for students to get help with their math homework. Three to four tutors are available at any given hour to work with students on a one-on-one basis for short periods of time as needed. The tutors circulate around the lab. In addition to tutoring services, the lab also provides the following: computers with math software, textbooks on reserve, a loan program for videos, CDs, and calculators, math worksheets, and class workshops. The Math Lab is open Monday-Thursday from 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m. and Friday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.; it is closed on Sundays, campus holidays, March 29 due to a non-instruction day, March 30 for Cesar Chavez Day, March 31-April 8 for Spring Break, and May 28 for Memorial Day. For more information, visit the Math Lab Web page or call (818) 947-7263.

The Academic Resource Center: Computer Commons in LARC 234 has 100 computers available for students to use. The computers have Internet access, MS Office suite, and students can print in black and white for $0.10 per page, or color for $0.25 per page. The Computer Commons is open Monday-Thursday from 7 a.m.-8:45 p.m., Friday from 7 a.m.-2 p.m., and Saturday from 1-5 p.m.; it is closed on Sundays, campus holidays, March 29 due to a non-instruction day, March 30 for Cesar Chavez Day, March 31-April 8 for Spring Break, and May 28 for Memorial Day. For more information, visit the Computer Commons Web page

In addition, the Academic Resource Center offers satellite learning assistance at locations on campus, such as:

  • Zone Equity/Athletics Tutoring offers an open computer lab and English and math tutoring for athletes in Community Services Center 106. The computer lab is open Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. and English and math tutoring is offered on Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; it is closed on campus holidays, March 29 due to a non-instruction day, March 30 for Cesar Chavez Day, and March 31-April 8 for Spring Break.   • Mosaic Tutoring is offered for students in the Black Scholars and Mi Communidad Programs at the Mosaic Center in Student Services Center 205. It is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 1-4 p.m.; it is closed on campus holidays, March 29 due to a non-instruction day, March 30 for Cesar Chavez Day, and March 31-April 8 for Spring Break. For more information, call (818) 778-5998.

  • Veterans Tutoring is available in English and Math for veterans at the Mosaic Center in Student Services Center 205. It is open Thursday from 1-4 p.m.; it is closed on campus holidays, March 29 due to a non-instruction day, March 30 for Cesar Chavez Day, and March 31-April 8 for Spring Break. For more information, call (818) 778-5627.

  • ASU/Family Resource Center Tutoring offers kid-friendly tutoring for student parents in the subjects of English and Math on the second floor of the Student Union. It is available on Wednesday from 4:30-6:30 p.m. and Friday from 12:30-2:30 p.m.; it is closed on campus holidays, March 29 due to a non-instruction day, March 30 for Cesar Chavez Day, and March 31-April 8 for Spring Break. For more information, call (818) 778-5516.

  • Family Resource Center Tutoring offers kid-friendly tutoring for student parents in the subjects of English and Math in the Family Resource Center in the Child Development and Family Complex. Tutoring is available on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-5 p.m.; it is closed on campus holidays, March 29 due to a non-instruction day, March 30 for Cesar Chavez Day, and March 31-April 8 for Spring Break. For more information, call (818) 778-5612.

  • Writers Club Study Hall is available on Wednesday and Thursday from 1-5 p.m. in Humanities 119; it is closed on campus holidays, March 29 due to a non-instruction day, March 30 for Cesar Chavez Day, and March 31-April 8 for Spring Break. For more information, call (818) 947-2810.

  • The LAVC Library on the first floor of the Library & Academic Resource Center (LARC) provides students with access to library materials and services including research help (print and online books, database of online articles databases, etc.), computers and printing, and group study rooms. The Library is open Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m.-8:45 p.m., Friday-Saturday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.; it is closed on Sunday, campus holidays, March 29 due to a non-instruction day, March 30 for Cesar Chavez Day, March 31-April 8 for Spring Break, and May 28 for Memorial Day. For more information including research help, visit the LAVC Library Web page.

  • The Virtual Valley Help Desk provides log-in and technical assistance for students enrolled in an online class. For assistance, call (818) 778-5834 or email virtualvalleyhelp@lavc.edu.

  • Online Tutoring is provided by NetTutor, and is available to students whose instructors are using Canvas for online courses or to web enhanced classes. For more information, visit the Virtual Valley Web page's overview of NetTutor

  • Biology Resource and Tutoring Center in AHS 232 provides group tutoring for all the life science courses offered at Valley College, including Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Biology 3, 6, 7, Medical Terminology, Oceanography, and Marine Biology.   • Embedded Tutoring is available through the STEP Program. The STEP program is a support services that provides STEP leaders, who are successful college students that work with instructors in specific courses to provide supplemental practice and direction for students.   • Extended Opportunity Program and Services (EOPS) on the second floor of the Student Services Center offers eligible students with the counseling, tutoring, textbook vouchers, workshops, priority registration, progress monitoring, and other services.   • TRiO/Student Support Services on the second floor of the Student Services Center offers eligible students with individual counseling, individual tutoring, academic workshops, cultural activities, transfer information, computer labs, and complimentary school supplies.   • Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) in the Student Services Annex offers support services, specialized instruction, and educational accommodations to students with disabilities so that they can participate as fully and benefit as equitably from the college experience as their non-disabled peers.
