LACCD Chancellor Rodriguez Announces Nomination for New LAVC President

LACCD Chancellor Francisco Rodriguez is forwarding Dr. Barry Gribbons for the approval of the LACCD Board of Trustees to serve as the next LAVC President. The Trustees will consider and approve his appointment at the Board’s August 7, 2019 meeting.

LACCD Chancellor Rodriguez Announces Nomination for New LAVC President

Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) Chancellor Francisco Rodriguez, Ph.D., today announced he is forwarding the name of Barry Gribbons, Ph.D., to be presented for approval by the District’s Board of Trustees as the next President of Los Angeles Valley College. The Trustees are expected to consider and approve his appointment at the Board’s August 7, 2019 meeting.

Dr. Gribbons currently is the Deputy Chancellor at Canyon of the Colleges, a position he has held since 2015. His appointment, subject to Board confirmation, caps nearly a year-long nationwide recruitment and selection process. Contract terms will be finalized concurrent with Board consideration with an anticipated start date of August 15, 2019.

“We are delighted that Dr. Gribbons has agreed to join our District as Valley’s next President. His strong credentials and experience are in direct alignment with LACCD’s mission to be the nation’s premier two-year college district in service to all who seek professional career training or higher education with a successful transfer to a four-year university,” Chancellor Rodriguez said.

Dr. Gribbons said he is “honored to have been selected by Chancellor Rodriguez” to serve as Valley College’s next President. “Valley’s dedicated faculty, staff and administrators have a tradition of providing access to strong programs. I’m excited to join with them as they celebrate their 70th year of exceptional higher education programs in service to our students and the surrounding community.”

Dr. Gribbons has more than 19 years of leadership and service at College of the Canyons. In addition to being Deputy Chancellor, he has held several administrative posts, including Assistant Superintendent, Vice President, Executive Dean and Dean, overseeing technology, research, planning, and public safety training.

From 1996 to 1999, he was Senior Researcher and Project Director at UCLA’s Center for the Study of Evaluation where his work coordinated large-scale education reforms to benefit underserved students. During this time, he was also a consultant to the U.S. Department of Education.

He has co-authored more than 520 research reports during the past 19 years and presented work at more than 50 national, statewide and regional conferences. He has also worked in research posts USC and has taught at California State University, Los Angeles. Dr. Gribbons received his Ph.D. in Education, with specialization in measurements and statistics, and a Master’s degree in education, both from USC; a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from California State University, Northridge, and his associate’s degree in math and science from the College of the Canyons.
