Faculty & Staff—RSVP for OBOC Summer Book Club Meeting!

LAVC has selected The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin as its OBOC book selection for the 2018-2019 academic year. Faculty/staff are invited to be a part of the online OBOC community via Canvas, or RSVP today for the next LAVC Summer Book Club meeting on August 21 at 1:30 p.m.

The LAVC One Book, One College (OBOC) program has announced that the college has selected The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin as the selection of the OBOC program for the 2018-2019 academic year.  

The Left Hand of Darkness is a groundbreaking work of science fiction, which includes themes of language and communication, gender, politics, religion, duty, the Other, connections to the natural world, warfare and love, is the winner of the Hugo and Nebula Awards.  

It tells the story of "a lone human ambassador [who] is sent to Winter, an alien world without sexual prejudice, where the inhabitants can change their gender whenever they choose. His goal is to facilitate Winter's inclusion in a growing intergalactic civilization. But to do so, he must bridge the gulf between his own views and those of the strange, intriguing culture he encounters. Embracing the aspects of psychology, society, and human emotion on an alien world, The Left Hand of Darkness stands as a landmark achievement in the annals of intellectual science fiction." --Amazon book description

As the OBOC selection for this year, LAVC faculty in a variety of disciplines will incorporate the The Left Hand of Darkness into their teaching during 2018-2019 academic year. In addition, there will be activities for LAVC students, faculty and staff in the Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 semesters.

The following 2018-2019 OBOC events are scheduled to take place:

  • Online Faculty/Staff Discussions through Canvas - Faculty/staff members interested in participating in the OBOC online Canvas community should email Michelle Lewis with their Canvas User ID (do not send your password).
  • Summer OBOC Faculty/Staff Book Club - The book club meetings are no-pressure, get-togethers with refreshments where participants talk about the book—whether you read a little or a lot. The Summer Book Club will meet on Monday, July 9 from 1-2:30 p.m. (lunch is provided) and Tuesday, August 21 from 1:30-3 p.m. (an afternoon "English tea" is provided). To RSVP, please email Michelle Lewis.
  • Fall Semester 2018 Scavenger Hunt - This scavenger hunt (date to be announced) where students will use their knowledge of the book to solve clues and win prizes!
  • Student Project Showcase - Students are invited to showcase their work, projects and performances at the "LAVC Sci-Fi Con" on Wednesday, November 28 from 1-2:30 p.m. in Monarch Hall. All types of student work, projects, or performances inspired by the OBOC book are encouraged.

The OBOC Program has free copies of the book for faculty and staff who want to participate (beginning Tuesday, May 22) at the LAVC Library's Reference Desk. Faculty who would like to order the book for your classes, can do so through the LAVC Bookstore. (To guarantee that the book is on the shelves for the first day of the Fall semester classes, book orders should be submitted by May 7, 2018). 

The One Book, One College Program, which is coordinated on campus by Michelle Lewis, is a successful concept has been implemented at other colleges and universities. The selected "One Book" is threaded across disciplines and throughout curriculum, to foster opportunities for creativity, scholarship, critical thinking, and academic dialogue. The One Book selection creates a shared intellectual experience for students, faculty, administration and staff. This is the third year of LAVC's One Book, One College Program. The 2016-2017 book was The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, and the 2017-2018 book was How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents.
