Athletics Update!—Three Women's Basketball Players Named to 1st Team All-Conference and One Named to All-State Second Team

Congrats to Andora Obi, Diamond O'Connor and Karina Moreno of Women's Basketball! The three ladies were honored with first team All-Conference, and Andora Obi was honored with All State second team. Women's Basketball team finishing second in conference and made it to the Southern California regional playoffs! Also, Baseball brings home wins over Folsom Lake, Irvine Valley and Pasadena, and Softball beat Oxnard. The Men's Swimming beat Citrus, Bakersfield, Hancock and Pierce at the first WSC Meet of the season.

LAVC Named a 2015 Tree Campus USA by the Arbor Day Foundation
LAVC Named a 2015 Tree Campus USA by the Arbor Day Foundation

The Arbor Day Foundation has named LAVC as a 2015 Tree Campus USA® for its effective campus forest management and for engaging staff and students in conservation goals. This is the fifth year that the college has been honored with the designation. Since 2011, LAVC has held the unique distinction of being the first and only California community college to be a Tree Campus USA®.

LAVC Family Resource Center Director to Participate in the Women and Girls Initiative
LAVC Family Resource Center Director to Participate in the Women and Girls Initiative

LAVC's Family Resource Center Director Marni Roosevelt was invited by Supervisor Sheila Kuehl to be a member of newly formed Women and Girls Initiative. This county-wide effort will focus on addressing issues such as health care, income inequality, domestic violence, sexual assault, and more that effect women and girls.

LAVC Child Development Professors Invited to Speak at Early Childhood STEM Conference

LAVC Child Development Chair Elmida Baghdaserians and LAVC Child Development Instructor Veronica Getskow recently presented at an annual STEM in Early Childhood Education Conference. Their talk was an introduction on the philosophy of Reggio Early Childhood Education programs in Italy and the connection to STEM.

A Warm Welcome to Armine Galukyan in the LAVC President's Office

LAVC welcomes Armine Galukyan, the new Executive Assistant in the LAVC President's Office. As the President's executive assistant, she is responsible for managing the operations of the President's Office and will assist in the planning campus-wide events. She joins Ilene Sutter, senior secretary, in supporting the needs of the college.

Welcoming Sarah Song, LAVC's New AVP of Administrative Services

LAVC welcomes Sarah Song as its new Associate Vice President in the Administrative Services Department. She started in November 2015, and oversees the Bookstore, Office Services, Community Services Program, and the college's emergency preparedness activities. In addition, she was recently named the college's ADA Coordinator.

Valley College Selects the 2016 Class of its Athletic Hall of Fame

LAVC will honor outstanding athletes, coaches, and staff that excelled in or made a major contribution to the Valley College Athletic Program at the LAVC Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on June 25. This year, the Class of 2016 inductees include the 1994 Football Team, Dale Beck, Leon Criner, Steve Danielson, Aaron Flowers, Yvette Maufas, Diedra Stark, and Roger Wolff.

LA Fellows Program Recognized by the LA City Council

The LA Fellow Program at LAVC was recently recognized by Councilmember Paul Krekorian and the Los Angeles City Council. The program offers a unique combination professional development and volunteerism as a meaningful pathway to help qualified job seekers find employment.

LAVC Founding Faculty Member Joseph Nordmann's Estate Donates $840,000 in Stock to LAVC Foundation

The LAVC Foundation recently received a gift of stock totaling $840,000 from the estate of Joseph Nordmann. Nordmann, a former department chair and professor in Chemistry and one of the founding members of the LAVC faculty in 1949, was a long-time supporter of the LAVC Foundation.
