The Summer in Rome Program is offered for transferable credit through Los Angeles Valley College. LAVC will provide a transcript upon request for the coursework completed overseas. Please verify the transferability of the course with your advisor.
Students on the Summer in Rome Program must enroll in the following course:
History 285 - Directed Studies (2 units, CSU/UC transferable)
The theme of this course is "Rome Through The Ages." It will cover the major historical eras of Roman history including the Roman Republic, the Roman Empire, Medieval Rome, the Renaissance, and the Counter-Reformation.
Cultural learning is an integral part of the Summer in Rome program. Tours of the historical sites such as the Ancient Roman Forum, the Trajan Villa, St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican as well as day excursions to places outside of Rome such as Orvieto and Pompeii are included in the program and are part of the curriculum. Thus much of the course
meetings take place outside of the classroom.
Students will produce a photo essay as a project for the course. This will consist of using your own images taken from the various site visits as well as from your own exploration of Rome. Students will incorporate these images into a paper with explanatory essays. (An alternative project can be assigned for those who will not have the use of a camera during the program.)
The following book is required:
Rome From The Ground Up by James H. S. McGregor (paperback, 2006)
It can be purchased new for under $15 at retail bookstores or online.
