Creating Accessible Documents in MS Office Workshop

The LAVC Technology Committee is holding two sessions of a "Creating Accessible Documents in MS Office" training workshop on Tuesday, October 12 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-4 p.m. in LARC 200. 

This workshop is for any faculty or staff member who posts documents to the LAVC website (including all departments, committees, instructors with webpages or web enhancements, posted syllabi, or forms). New federal guidelines require compliance with the amendments to Section 508 accessibility guidelines (WCAG 2.0) by January 18, 2018. This means that everything posted (not just online course material) on the LAVC website must be completely accessible to people with disabilities. 

This "Creating Accessible Documents in MS Office" workshop will share how to save time and create accessible documents that uses the LIST model for access! Learn to create documents that are accessible to screen readers and other assistive computer technologies by starting with MS Word and then creating accessible PDFs. This hands-on training will provide direct experience with following four simple steps to creating accessible documents. It will focus on Word, but the LIST model applies just as well to all authoring tools. 

Participants will be able to do the following:

  • understand what it means to create accessible documents

  • follow the “LIST” model with Microsoft Word to develop accessible documents

  • utilize styles to create structure

  • use the accessibility action wizard in Adobe Acrobat Pro to convert from MS Word documents to accessible PDFs

  • Learn how to make your documents accessible at this workshop.

While the morning session will be geared towards staff and the afternoon session will be geared towards faculty, faculty and staff can come to either session.
